Mixed Media on a Patterned Paper Background

One of my favorite techniques when using wood grain patterned papers is to stencil with either white or silver mixed media onto the background. This lovely contrast with a medium to dark wood grain has a whimsical effect that I adore!  For this layout, I used Vicki Boutin’s Iridescent Glaze and a stencil from Paige Evans to add a cascade of stars down the left side of the background. This not only creates a fun pop of dimension and shine, but also creates a column from which I can build my layers.

Once my layout is finished, I often add a border around the outside or in this case, between the layers of the background. I used a Uniball Signa white gel pen to highlight the outer edge of the wood grain paper and give the appearance of depth between the layers. This line doesn’t have to be perfect and gives the layout a handmade feel that I prefer!

This is a fun technique you can use on your December kit with the gorgeous wood grain paper from Pink Paislee. I hope this inspires you to incorporate mixed media on your patterned paper backgrounds!
