A Simple Mixed Media Background

Whether you are beginning art journaling, mixed media scrapbooking, or just experimenting, Vicki Boutin Art Crayons are a great place to start!  These crayons are intense pigments that react to water.  By simply mixing them together, you have instant watercolors.  Simply color the crayons onto a smooth surface:

Add water to the pigment and mix well, making sure to liquefy all of the pigment.  I prefer to use a paintbrush for this mixing and plenty of water.  You can mix the colors together to create new colors or use them as they come.

Brush the watercolors into blocks of alternating colors on to thick watercolor or mixed media cardstock.  Be sure to add several areas of each color for interesting contrast!  Once dry, take a smaller brush and splatter on each color with its coordinating watercolor for a fun and simple background!

There a number of other ways to use the Art Crayons too!  They mix with modeling paste to add color, as a watercolor, it can be layered on the background with a brayer or even just used to paint a stamped image!  These are an excellent mixed media option for beginners and a lot of fun to experiment with!
